Cruise-line tour vs. an independent private day, side by side

The ease of a cruise-line excursion. The freedom of a private independent day. The one thing no independent company can do is make the ship wait, so we never cut it close.

The ease of a cruise-line excursion. The freedom of a private independent day.

On a bus of strangers, the day moves at the pace of the slowest person. On an independent day with your own driver and vehicle, it moves at your pace.

Everything the cruise line gives you, we do too. Minus the bus full of strangers.

Back with time to spare

Every day is built with the buffer, so you're back at the port an hour or more before all-aboard, every time, by design.

Plus responsive communication from your US-based Roatán Excursion & Transportation Specialist.

Delays handled for you

We track your ship. If it's running late or the times change, we replan your day and let you know.

Every time, just like the cruise line.

One team, two locations: the perfect setup

In the US: your Roatán Excursion & Transportation Specialist, here to answer any question and help you plan the perfect day, with easy, quick communication by phone, text or email. What we give you that a cruise-line tour can't

Just your group, from two to thirty

No strangers, no minimums. Private even for a couple, and still private for a family reunion.

Your own driver, on your phone all day

The same driver and vehicle from the port and back. Your driver stays close by, so just text or call.

Your pace, your call

Enjoying a stop and want to stay longer? No problem. Skip what you don't love. Nobody waiting on you, and you're not waiting on anyone.

The Island Time Pass

Finished your paid excursion early? Keep your car and driver for the rest of your port day, at no extra charge. Book by Dec 31, 2026.

See details

Your paid excursion ends, your day doesn't. Just ask your driver: lunch at a local spot, another beach, the shops, a lookout. No extra charge for the car or the driver; you pay only for what you eat, or the entrance fee if you choose an additional activity outside your booked day. You'll still be back at the port an hour or more before all-aboard. Ready-made days only.

Planned to your ship, not a bus schedule

Built around your ship's real times, and you see the whole stop-by-stop timeline, in both clocks, before you book.

Mix and match your day

Sloths, then the beach. Chocolate and rum, then the reef. Pick a ready-made day, build your own, or go Freestyle.

A local who knows the island

Driver-guides with 15+ years on Roatán: the history, the views, where to eat, and the spots the big tours skip.

Time to shop before you board

You're back at the port an hour or more before all-aboard, with time to browse or grab a drink.

Your money stays on the island

You're supporting local drivers and their families, not a cruise line's cut, and often paying less than the cruise line's group tour.

The worries, answered

Will the ship leave without us?

Ships don't wait for independent tours. That's exactly why we plan you back at the port an hour or more before all-aboard, every time, by design.

What if our ship skips Roatán?

Full refund, every time.

How do we find our driver?

Your driver waits at the pickup spot with your name on a sign. Your reservation has clear directions to the pickup spot, and your driver's name and phone number are sent to you before you sail.

What if it rains?

Rain or shine, your day goes ahead. If something can't run, we substitute or refund it, and if we ever cancel because it's unsafe, you get a full refund.

Who are you?

How to choose an independent company

Seven questions to ask anyone before you book. Here's how we answer them.

How we plan your day

Ships usually spend about 8½ hours docked in Roatán. That leaves roughly 6¾ hours for your private day.

  1. Two clocks, both shown. Your ship keeps either its home port's time or Roatán time. It's the captain's call, and no schedule says which. We show both, always, and your reservation has a place to circle the one your ship is on.
  2. Off the ship and to your driver. About 45 minutes to get off the ship. Your reservation has clear directions to the pickup spot, where your private driver waits with a sign showing your name. Your driver's name and phone number are sent to you before you sail. If it takes longer to get off, your driver waits.
  3. Every excursion mapped to your port window. Real durations plus drive times, against the hours you actually have ashore, starting when your first stop opens.
  4. An hour held for the trip back. You're back at the port an hour or more before all-aboard. That hour is never counted as touring time.
  5. Your driver watches the clock. Your reservation lists all your stops and how long you'll spend at each.

Getting off the ship in Roatán

Carnival, Princess and Holland America ships dock at Isla Tropicale (formerly Mahogany Bay). Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Celebrity, Virgin Voyages, Margaritaville at Sea, Regent, Oceania and Crystal ships dock at Port of Roatán (Coxen Hole). Your reservation shows your port and the exact steps.

Port of Roatán (Coxen Hole)

  1. When you get off the ship, head to the shopping area and turn right under the double stairway (you'll also see a sign for taxis).
  2. You'll pass the independent tour sellers. They'll try hard to sell you an excursion; just tell them you're already booked.
  3. At the end of that section, turn left, then right toward port exit gate #1.
  4. Your driver is waiting across the street with a sign showing your last name.

Isla Tropicale (formerly Mahogany Bay)

  1. When you get off the ship, head toward the duty-free shop and walk through.
  2. Walk up the hill and turn left toward the taxi parking lot.
  3. Turn left toward the port exit gate and walk up the hill.
  4. Your driver is waiting with a sign showing your last name.

Can't manage the hill? A taxi is $2 per person; tell the driver your private driver is waiting at the gate.

Before you sail: your driver's name and phone number are on your reservation, sent to you before you sail, so you can reach them if you need to. Only go with the person holding a sign with your name.

Questions people ask

Is it better to book Roatán excursions through the cruise line or independently?

Both can be a great day. Book with the cruise line if you want the ship to wait for you no matter what. Choose an independent private day if you want only your group, your own pace and often a lower price per person. Pick a company that plans your day around your ship's real times and has you back at the port an hour or more before all-aboard.

Will the ship wait if my independent tour is late?

No. Ships wait for their own tours, not independent ones. That's why we plan every day backward from all-aboard and have you back at the port an hour or more before all-aboard, every time, by design.

Is it cheaper to book a Roatán excursion independently?

Often, especially for families and groups. Our private days start at $49 per person for two guests, with your own vehicle and driver. The price you see is the price at checkout: no surprises, no hidden fees. Group savings: 5 or more guests pay less per person on most tours.

Can I book a Roatán excursion that isn't through my cruise line?

Yes. You can leave the port and meet an independent driver or tour. Your reservation has clear directions to the pickup spot, and your driver's name and phone number are sent to you before you sail. Your driver waits with your name on a sign.

What happens if my ship skips Roatán?

With the cruise line, the tour is refunded. With us, you get a full refund too, every time.

What should I ask an independent company before I book?

Ask whether they plan around your ship's real docking and all-aboard times, how early they get you back, whether they show both clocks, what happens if the ship's times change or the ship skips Roatán, whether the tour is private or shared, how you pay and get refunds, and who answers your questions before you sail.
